Simulation and Comparative Analysis Between Svpwm and Spwm Techniques for Speed Control of 3 Phase Induction Motor

A DC to AC converter is an electronic apparatus that transforms direct current into alternating current. It is commonly employed to provide variable frequency drive for 3-phase induction motor (IM) in applications. To achieve adjustable voltage and frequency on the input side of the inverter, an appropriate pulse width modulation (PWM) technique is necessary. To do this, the sinusoidal pulse width modulation (SPWM) and space vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM) techniques are used in this work. In the SPWM, 3-phase reference modulating signals are juxtaposed with a carrier signal to produce PWM signals. On the other hand, SVPWM utilizes a rotating voltage reference vector as a voltage instead of 3-phase modulating waves. The output voltage magnitude and frequency of the inverter are regulated by the amplitude modulation and angular frequency of the reference vector. In comparison to SPWM, the SVPWM exhibits higher efficiency and lower Total harmonic distortion (THD) in the output voltage, thanks to its ability to use the input voltage of the inverter more effectively. Consequently, SVPWM has emerged as a more crucial PWM technique for controlling various AC drives in 3-phase inverters. This paper presents a conceptual model of SVPWM simulated using MATLAB/SIMULINK software, with a subsequent performance comparison against SPWM.
