Evaluation of Energy Efficiency for 5G Millimeter Wave Terminals

Due to the high-frequency characteristics of millimeter wave (mmWave) technology, energy consumption is one of the important issues for the 5G user equipment (UE) that uses mmWave for high-speed data transmission. To solve the aforementioned problem, connected mode discontinuous reception (DRX) is proposed by 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP). In this paper, we design field trials to evaluate the energy efficiency and latency performance of 5G mmWave terminals with and without connected mode DRX technology. In addition, we further calculated the environmental carbon reduction benefits of using connected mode DRX for base stations.
