Analysis of Harmonic Generated by Household Electronic Equipments with SMPS Using Matlab® Simulink®

Power quality issues are on the rise due to the growing prevalence of electronic equipment, resulting in distortion of voltages and currents. When a large number of low-power, single-phase non-linear loads are present, it can lead to significant harmonic issues. This can result in elevated harmonic voltages and currents, which can be detrimental to the overall power quality of electrical systems. In this work, the household electronic devices with the switch mode power supply (SMPS) are modelled using Matlab® Simulink® to analyze their non-linear behavior. The harmonic analysis is conducted for three different household equipments with SMPS (i.e., a compact fluorescent lamp of 11 W, a light-emitting diode of 3.5W, and a personal computer of 50W) in the time-domain. Moreover, the total harmonic distortion (THD) of current and voltage of these nonlinear household loads is also discussed in this work.
