Co-Location of GEO Satellites Using Differential Game Theory

Due to the increasing number of geostationary satellites, new co-location strategies are becoming more appealing due to: 1) the ability to operate more satellites in a slot; 2) the ability to use less fuel. A particle swarm optimization algorithm has been used in this article to calculate the optimal position of the satellites based on the co-location requirements and the frequency band used in the inter-satellite link. Additionally, the differential game theory optimization method is also used to design maneuvers for station-keeping of the satellites to minimize fuel consumption. Game theory can be categorized into cooperative and non-cooperative forms. It is essential for satellites to share information, and make decisions in cooperative mode. A non-cooperative mode involves each satellite making its own decisions based on information received from other satellites. Unlike the eccentricity/inclination separation strategy, differential game theory significantly reduces the fuel consumption of three satellites co-located in the same orbit. Furthermore, the results indicate that, depending on the angle of view required, the optical link consumes more fuel than the radio link.
