Assessment of the Secondary Service Power System Impacts of Increasing Electrification of Vehicles and Heating in the Yukon

This paper investigates distribution system adequacy with increased adoption of home electric vehicle charging and electric heating using Quasi-Static Time Series analysis. The purpose of the study is to ascertain potential distribution system infrastructure upgrades to meet government climate action plan transportation electrification targets, with a focus on level 2 electric vehicle charging at the residential level. Distribution system models for primary and secondary service were developed from accurate field surveys. Distribution system load profiles were developed from existing substation load data. Results highlight thermal constraints such as transformer overloading and line ampacities, and voltage exceptions such as under-voltages at the point of service to customers.
