Comparison and evaluation of cruise atrium theme design

Cruise ship is a large building for water navigation. The cruise atrium is the most critical node of the cruise ship public space and the transportation hub connecting horizontal and vertical transportation. Every cruise ship has a specific theme, which is related to the brand positioning of the cruise company, the culture of the starting point and the destination of the route, etc. As the first stop for visitors to board the ship, the interior design of the atrium is often designed gorgeously according to the cruise theme, aiming to bring visitors novel experience and direction guidance. This paper takes the atrium of China's first self-built large cruise ship as the research object, innovatively combines space narrative and space syntax to evaluate its three interior decoration designs. These three designs for the same cruise ship atrium have very different themes, and the expected space experience for visitors is also very different. Firstly, the space narrative analysis of these three designs is carried out from the three elements of narrative: objects, scenes, and events. In addition, Depthmap, a space syntax software, was used to analyse the connection and visual integration of each layer, to quantitatively evaluate the spatial experience effect of the atrium thematic design. Through comparative analysis, the advantages and disadvantages of the design were found, and optimization suggestions were put forward for the design that affected traffic and weakened the spatial experience effect.
