Tool Swing Angle Control for Multi-axis Machining of Molars

To restore the function and appearance of damaged teeth, new physical teeth need to be developed through sophisticated manufacturing processes to replace the damaged parts. Along with a better machining result and higher machining accuracy, the multi-axis machining technology is currently being used in the field of dentistry. However, the measured model data is different from the general CAD model, and there is still a lack of effective method verification for multi-axis machining of the measured model data of teeth. Focusing on the molars among the teeth, this paper proposes a tool swing angle control method to achieve the multi-axis machining. By determining the center point position and the centerline direction, the intersection planes for the radial reciprocating tool path can be obtained, and the tool swing angle for each cutter location point can be controlled, which is always away from the center point. Through the program implementation, the NC code for the multi-axis machining of molars can be generated, and the simulation testing is conducted. The testing results show that the calculation can achieve the tool swing angle control and the multi-axis machining for the measured molar models.
