22 kW IMS-based Bidirectional DC-DC Converter Using Surface Mount SiC MOSFETs for OBCs

Recent developments in the electric vehicle automotive market have fueled the demand for higher power on-board chargers (OBCs), which are necessary to support the power levels and densities required for longer range and reduced charging time. Using a discrete SiC MOSFET-based 22 kW bidirectional OBC DC-DC CLLC resonant converter, this paper investigates the impact of power semiconductor deviceselection, power circuit board (PCB) design, thermal interface material (TIM) selection, and hardwareimplementation on thermal management and peak efficiency. Experimental results show a 98.6% peakefficiency and 9.4 kW/L power density can be achieved for both charging and discharging modes.
