Failure Resilient Green Traffic Engineering

Traffic engineering is essential for optimizing computer network performance and ensuring efficient data transfer in backbone networks. Green traffic engineering, in particular, aims to reduce energy consumption and environmental impact while maintaining the efficacy of network operations. This paper presents an innovative algorithm that utilizes a 2-Segment Routing approach to reduce the number of active linecards within a backbone network, focusing on improving energy efficiency. Notably, the main contribution of this research lies in its incorporation of network failures into the optimization process. Unlike previous approaches, our algorithm ensures a balance between minimizing energy consumption and maintaining network functionality in the face of failures. Through a meticulous evaluation using real-world data obtained from a Tier-1 Internet Service Provider (ISP), we demonstrate the algorithm’s effectiveness in achieving energy savings while preserving network robustness during adverse scenarios. This dual emphasis on energy efficiency and resilience represents a notable advancement in the field of network optimization.
