The historical trends of advanced CMOS in the past are reviewed and the future technological trends beyond 2nm forecasted by the roadmap [1] are discussed. Metrics for speed and energy tell us that although the progress may slow down, the CMOS advancements will not stop soon. One of the most serious issues to be addressed is a rapid increase in the power density.
