To assess the Present Flood Mitigation Practices of Barangay Basak Lapu-Lapu City Drainage System, Cebu Province, Philippines

Flooding has been a prevalent issue in the Philippines, especially in Cebu City. Barangay Basak in Lapu-Lapu City is no exception. The problem has escalated into a persistent concern, severely affecting its residents. This study aimed to evaluate the drainage system within Barangay Basak, Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu, as well as the existing flood mitigation practices in its sitios. Additionally, it sought to identify the factors influencing flooding during heavy rainfall. Data were collected through survey questionnaires, face-to-face interviews, and Geographic Information System (GIS) mapping to comprehensively analyze the problems and propose effective solutions. Based on the data gathered, 41.41% of the residents reported experiencing floods in their area. Furthermore, the majority of the respondents, accounting for 38.82%, observed that improper waste disposal/garbage caused drainage overflow in specific locations. These findings highlight that improper garbage disposal significantly obstructs the drainage system, leading to flooding and drainage overflow. Other contributing factors to flooding include the absence of a drainage system in various sitio locations and the inadequacy of the existing drainage systems. Therefore, based on these findings, implementing stricter policies for residents' garbage disposal, constructing well-designed drainage systems, and augmenting their capacity are vital solutions to address these issues effectively.
