Cryogenic Liquid Nitrogen Based Refrigeration Peak Shaving System for Edge Data Center

As the basic platform of data center cooling, air conditioners cannot guarantee full work all the time due to accidental failure and power supply problems. This paper presents a cryogenic liquid nitrogen (LN₂) based refrigeration peak shaving system for edge data center. The emergency cooling power of LN₂ can reach more than 15 times that of chilled water. With the emergency refrigeration from a kW-class experimental prototype, the operating temperature for the server cabinets can be well maintained around 28 °C for a long-time safe operation. The new LN₂ based peak shaving platform offers engineers, teachers and students a smart tool to design and optimize the high reliability cooling system in various edge data centers.
