The mechanism of Musa paradisiaca treatment in Diabetes mellitus

The prevalence of diabetes mellitus has increased drastically worldwide. Since ancient times, African traditional medicines have employed different herbs, including Musa paradisiaca, to manage and treat diabetes and other chronic diseases. The understanding of the antidiabetic action of Musa paradisiaca with the help of boosting scientific knowledge will help its therapeutic prospects. Several studies involving M. paradisiaca revealed that it has potent anti-diabetic activities as the several components of the plant are highly rich in bioactive compounds useful in the treatment of diabetes. The plant showed anti-hyperglycemic activity and hypoglycemic potential by reducing fasting blood glucose, stimulating insulin secretion and increasing liver glycogen. This review gives an overview of the antidiabetic activities exhibited by Musa paradisiaca.
