Thermal effect and anti-/de-icing characteristics of nanosecond pulse surface dielectric barrier discharge

Clean energy has received increasing attention in the recent past. Wind power, as a widely distributed clean energy source, has been promoted and applied on a large scale. However, the icing problem of the blades, which it faces under the high humidity and low temperature environment in autumn and winter seasons, has not been solved yet. In this regard, some researchers have proposed a novel anti-/de-icing scheme: surface dielectric barrier discharge (SDBD). In this study, the thermal effect and anti-/de-icing characteristics of SDBD driven by nanosecond pulses are experimentally investigated. It is found that the voltage amplitude and repetition frequency in the pulse parameters have a remarkable effect on the thermal effect, while the voltage pulse width has essentially no effect. Its physical explanations are given in the paper. With proper pulse parameters, this approach can effectively achieve the anti-/de-icing of the object surface. This study can provide physical guidance for parameter control in SDBD anti-/de-icing applications.
