Peak short-circuit current calculation of PMSG considering PI controller saturation characteristic

The peak short-circuit current (SCC) is a key indicator for power equipment selection and stability verification. The peak SCC output by permanent magnetic synchronous generator (PMSG) is always considered equal to its steady-state maximum value in SCC calculation. The calculation result would be inaccurate, as the proportional-integral (PI) controller of PMSG converter always becomes saturated during the fault, which could significantly affect the transient peak SCC. To address this problem, this paper proposes a peak SCC calculation method of PMSG based on the PI controller saturation characteristics. The transient SCC expressions considering the PI controller entering and exiting saturation are derived by mathematical approach. Based on the transient SCC, the peak value calculation method is proposed with multiple situations. The calculation accuracy and practicality of the proposed method are verified through electromagnetic transient simulation.
