5G based Passive Internet of Things: Challenges and Potential Solutions

abstract-Recently, the cellular-connected passive Internet of Things (IoT) has attracted a great deal of interest, which has led to research into the deployment of environmental IoT in 3GPP systems. The aim of the research is to meet commercial deployment requirements. Passive IoT can fulfil service requirements for many use cases and scenarios that cannot be covered by existing IoT technologies. This paper outlines the key findings of the 3GPP Release 18 study progress. We first present the deployment scenarios, use cases and services defined in the research. We then discuss techniques for enabling ambient IoT deployments in 3GPP systems that rely on ultra-low-power, ultra-low-complexity devices for ultra-low-end IoT applications. This paper provides potential solutions to cope with issues such as multiple access and interference.
