The impact of Energy Storage System on the flexible operation of the Renewable-Based Virtual Power Plant

In the coming years, an adaptive power system is essential in order to incorporate the growing distributed generations (DGs) and renewable energy sources (RESs) with Energy Storage System (ESS) facilities. virtual power plant (VPP) represents a cutting-edge power generation technology that consolidates and optimizes generation, network constraints, energy storage devices, and demands. It offers significant improvements in power system flexibility, facilitates better utilization of distributed generations in the user-side, and fosters the progress of wholesale markets. Despite its potential, VPP is currently in its early stages of development. Current work imposes the VPP concept to implement proactive inspection over diverse DERs. The paper explores the impact of DERs on each other and climaxes the benefits of the VPP idea, Considering the technical, and economic features. Moreover, the model considers uncertainties associated with Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) via a scenario-driven probabilistic method. The framework is mathematically described as a Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) model, ensuring the optimal solution globally. To validate its effectiveness, the framework is utilized for the IEEE 33-BUS distribution test grid, and the results demonstrate VPP’s capability in controlling challenges such as power curtailment posed by RESs through ESS facilities.
