Shielding Effectiveness of Mesh Wire at Low Frequencies in Near Magnetic Field

Electronic circuits are used widely today for a variety of purposes, including computing, automation, and communication. Additionally, the size of electronic devices has decreased due to the widespread use of integrated circuits and integration. As electronic devices shrink and pack more circuits into tighter spaces, their proximity can lead to unwanted interference. This “electromagnetic interference” (EMI) is a growing concern for designers, not only for functionality but also for potential health risks. Electromagnetic shielding is the process of minimizing electromagnetic field penetration into space by blocking them with a conductive barrier. This study investigated the effectiveness of wire mesh as an EMI shield. Using the simulations program (CST STUDIO SUITE), a circular antenna was placed at the center, and a wire mesh barrier was positioned at various distances. The strength of the electromagnetic field was measured both with and without the shielding, across a range of frequencies and for various mesh configurations (dimensions and material). The results demonstrated the potential of wire mesh for EMI shielding. With specific combinations of mesh dimensions and materials, a shielding efficiency of about 20 dB was achieved in the range of 500 to 1500 Hz, particularly at 1000 Hz. This demonstrates the potential of wire mesh as an EMI mitigation option in a range of applications.
