Sensorized Non-Invasive Ventilator for Clinical Applications in Telemedicine

The prevalence of respiratory diseases has recently surged, accompanied by an increase in closely related complications (e.g., cardiovascular diseases, hypoxia). Many of these pathologies require dedicated devices for ventilation and monitoring of physiological parameters. Hereafter, we propose the development of a sensorized non-invasive mechanical ventilator (NIV), designed clinical settings and homecare which follow the paradigm of telemedicine. The use of non-invasive methods to collect essential health data ensures a more comfortable and user-friendly experience for people receiving home care. The core of NIV is a turbine responsible for generating air flow, capable of providing and monitoring a positive two-phase pressure of approximately 500 l/min at 50 cmH2O, depending on the inspiration/expiration phase. The entire NIV is monitored with a 16 MHz microcontroller, which uses the I2C protocol to manage sensors that measure oxygen saturation level (SpO2), heart rate, temperature, humidity, carbon dioxide (CO2) and total volatile organic compounds (TVOC) detection. In this respect, a Wi-Fi system is integrated for the transmission and reception of monitored data via a smartphone, enabling remote control of the parameters recorded by the Non-Invasive Ventilation (NIV) system.
