A Multi-energy Microgrid Solution Integrating Low-Voltage DC Power Supply Technology

Renewable energy has an intermittent and stochastic character due to the influence of meteorology and geographical location. Especially, in some areas, the total outputs of photovoltaic and wind generation cannot meet the load side demand in rainy seasons. Generally, energy storage is required to balance the power generation curve and demand. However, the installation of energy storage often leads to lower economic efficiency and is not feasible in certain conditions. Therefore, this article proposes a multi-energy microgrid solution that integrates low-voltage DC power supply technology. Through the generating composition of multi-energies, including photovoltaic, wind, and rain, the solution significantly smooths power generation curves, reducing the impact of intermittency and fluctuation of distributed energy resources (DER). This solution is also an attempt to solve the problem of insufficient total output during the rainy season. The integrated low-voltage DC power supply technology enables coordinated control with various connected DC loads, e.g. electric vehicles, improving the integration of the microgrid. The coordinated control achieves a reasonable match between the DC load demand and the smoothed generation capacity curve. Generally, the solution is a comprehensive optimization of DER generation and load demand, improving the resilience and flexibility of a microgrid.
