Zero-Trust Enabling Intrusion Detection Protection for Software Defined Vehicles

Today's vehicle architectures build trust on a frame-work that is static, binary and rigid; tomorrow's software defined vehicle architectures require a trust model that is dynamic, nuanced, and adaptive. Safety engineers struggle with integrating Intrusion Detection Systems into cyber-physical systems. We propose adapting the zero trust principles to automotive systems by weighing the risk of action against the trust in messages to enable direct influence of intrusion detection systems in vehicles. This strategy offers a potential solution to the problem of implementing real-time responses to active attacks.
