Optimal Design of PD Controllers Using BCMO Algorithm for Active Control of Structures

Reducing harmful vibrations of structures by active control devices using different control algorithms is an exciting ​​research area with many important applications. The present work introduces a simple approach to optimally design a Proportional-Derivative (PD) controller for active control of structures. The control force is obtained using a control gain vector and all system state variables. The PD controller is optimized using the elements of the control gain vector as the design variables to minimize the system's relative displacement and absolute acceleration using the Balancing composite motion optimization (BCMO) algorithm. The optimal constraints include the stability of the system and the average control force (related to the system's control energy). The studied model is a 3-story building structure subjected to earthquake loads. The simulation results show that the proposed controllers have high efficiency, ensure stability, and require low control energy compared to the results of a controller in a published study.
