Case Studies in Control Engineering Educational Programs in Ukrainian Technical Universities

The use of case studies in engineering education, in particular in control engineering educational programs, is a promising approach that can enhance students' learning experiences and prepare them for the complexities of real-world engineering practice. Ukrainian technical universities have considerable positive experience in this regard, which they have successfully used to adapt their learning objectives to martial law conditions. Teachers either offer students research topics that meet the challenges of martial law, or adapt existing cases to the changed conditions. In the case study “Automation system for mine drainage unit” students solve the complex problem of the mine drainage unit optimal control using modern industrial automation technologies - PLC programming, human-machine interface settings, development of an automation object simulator. The task, relevant in peacetime, has become urgent now, when the issues of ecological and sustainable functioning of mining enterprises have become more acute. This increases students' motivation for deep learning of the material and high-quality performance of the task. An example of a case that arose in response to the challenges of war is a system for monitoring students' vital activity indicators in shelters.
