Enhancing Low-Inertia Power Systems with Grid Forming Based Hybrid Energy Storage Technology

This paper delves into the significance of integrating Hybrid Energy Storage Systems (UCAP and Battery) equipped with Grid-Forming (GFM) conversion in low-inertia systems. Considering recent advancements in power system dynamics and control strategies, the study emphasizes the crucial role of hybrid energy system from the DC side of the grid forming converter in addressing the challenges posed by reduced system inertia on grid stability. Through an in-depth analysis of system inertia dynamics and frequency control mechanisms, the paper elucidates how HESS-GFM systems can emulate synchronous generators, thereby covering whide range of services like conventional generators. The aim of this paper is mainly on exploring the operational advantages of using a hybrid system in comparison to the BESS system considering aspects such as frequency regulation, and grid resynchronization stability. The findings underscore the importance for utilities, policymakers, and researchers to prioritize the deployment and optimization of hybrid energy storage technologies for GFM conversion systems as fundamental strategies for ensuring future grid stability and advancing the transition toward a sustainable energy landscape.
