Mathematical models for the all-or-none activity of some neurons

Measurements of the statistical properties of spike trains from single neurons are used to suggest a mathematical model based on a random walk toward an absorbing barrier. A wide range of neuronal activity can be described in terms of two parameters which can be associated with known physiological mechanisms.
