Experiment Investigation of Energy Harvester Based on Piezoelectric for Indoor Air Quality Sensor Node

Sensor nodes play a pivotal role in the Internet of Things by collecting data from the environment. The reliance on batteries for these nodes presents challenges in maintenance and replacement. To enhance energy efficiency and reduce operational costs, this study explores the potential of piezoelectric energy harvesters as an alternative power source for indoor air quality sensor nodes. The research involves the careful selection of piezoelectric elements, followed by measurements and performance analyses in various environmental conditions. Mechanical vibrations induced by ambient movements or machinery are harnessed to generate electrical energy. The experimental setup includes integrating piezoelectric elements onto the sensor node, exposing it to optimized conditions for energy harvesting. Initial tests vary frequencies and amplitudes to maximize energy conversion efficiency. Results indicate that piezoelectric energy harvester element placed in constant airflow of 5m/s can produce substantial power for 489-1819mV under suitable conditions, offering a promising solution to sensor node energy challenges. The generated power proves to be a viable solution for enhancing autonomy and reducing maintenance costs associated with sensor node operations.
