Three-Dimensional Dynamic Wake Model for Real-Time Wind Farm Simulation

This paper presents the modeling framework Smart WindPark Laboratory Wind Flow Model for real-time capable and three-dimensional dynamic wind farm simulation. Coupling it to a set of laboratory-scaled wind turbine test benches allows for holistic wind farm simulations, covering dynamics ranging from the aerodynamics domain through mechatronics to power electronics and grid interaction with all relevant cross-couplings. Collective wind farm operation through active wake control, dynamic interactions between wind farms and cluster optimization or grid support by providing frequency restoration reserves are fields of research which require a simulation environment with the aforementioned capabilities. This work particularly focuses on dynamic wake modeling to predict the impact of wind turbines on ambient flow in terms of velocity deficit, increased turbulence and wake meandering. Based on model requirements, a modular framework designed for real-time execution is proposed, modeling and implementation aspects are discussed and simulation results are presented.
