Transient Stability Enhancement of a PEM Fuel Cell Based DC-DC Boost Converter via Robust Composite Backstepping and Integral Terminal Sliding Mode Control

A robust composite control scheme has been proposed in this paper for a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) connected to a DC-DC boost converter (DDBC). The proposed composite controller incorporates the integral terminal sliding mode control (ITSMC) and the recursive backstepping method. The backstepping approach guarantees the higher tracking efficacy of all states, whereas the ITSMC scheme with an enhanced reaching law provides finite-time convergence of the output voltage. Moreover, the singularity issue associated with existing sliding mode controller (SMC) is lessened by the inclusion of an integral terminal sliding surface. By considering the fluctuations in parameters, external disturbances, and model mismatches into the mathematical model of DDBC with PEMFC as lumped disturbances, the robustness of the suggested composite controller is ensured. In addition, for assuring the robustness of the proposed composite controller, the transient stability of DDBC is examined employing the control Lyapunov function (CLF). Finally, the validity of the designed controller is assessed through rigorous analyses on MATLAB/Simulink platform under different operating situations. In comparison to the existing ITSMC, the proposed composite scheme shows fast reference tracking ability and resilience against disruptions with less settling time, overshoot, and undershoot.
