A Meta-Analytical Review on Microplastic Pollution in the Indian Ocean

The growing threat of microplastics in marine and terrestrial ecosystems prompts urgent action to understand and mitigate their impact. Drawing on their prevalence in the Indian environment, their characteristics, sources, distribution patterns, relative concentrations, risks they impose and the techniques employed to study them, this research aims to contribute nuanced insights into the spatial patterns of microplastic pollution in the Indian Ocean. In addressing the role of India in global microplastic pollution, this study delves into understanding the extent of research conducted in the domain and showcases the importance of understanding how microplastics interact with the environment as pollutants, including their health impacts on biota, trophic transfer, and bioaccumulation through water currents. This enables the potential of providing a foundation for informed policy decisions and effective mitigation strategies.
