A System Level Overview of FRICO — A Single-Pilot Cockpit Assistance System

This paper provides a system level overview of FRICO — a cockpit assistance system meant for Single Pilot Operations (SPOs) in ultralight (UL) aircraft. To date, FRICO integrates multiple AI-based libraries in automated planning, activity and intent recognition, as well as active goal-oriented dialogue for supporting the pilot in decision-making, especially in emergencies. We explain the underlying functional AI-modules of FRICO, as well as the communication interface between the modules and their interplay. Owing to FRICO’s modular architecture, it can be adopted for future research works in pilot-AI interactions for UL use cases and beyond.
