Lightweight Mitigation Against DIO Suppression Attack In RPL-Based IoT Networks

The past decade has seen a technological revolution brought about by the Internet of Things (IoT). Due to the characteristics of sensors in IoT networks and the lack of security on the Internet, IoT is vulnerable to various attacks. Most issues within the IoT ecosystem arise during the routing process. At this stage, the attacking node shows some difficulties in delivering the packet. Routing protocols for low-power lossy networks (RPL) are vulnerable to a variety of attacks. These attacks can cause disruptions that impact network performance and the availability of resources. This study investigates the impact of a new type of attack called DIO suppression attack and proposes countermeasures against RPL-based attacks. This attack destroys the topology of the network, causing some nodes to connect to each other. The attacking node uses the drip algorithm to perform this attack. The consequences of the DIO suppression attack in Different topologies and scenarios are explored Within this study, we’ve also put forward a lightweight countermeasure to protect the networks against this attack. This method involves comparing the time difference between two DIO messages with a proposed threshold value for each node to pinpoint the node initiating the attack within the network.
