Loss Analysis Method for Laminated Magnetic Cores in Inductive Power Transfer Applications

This paper provides an analysis of the laminated magnetic core implemented in inductive power transfer (IPT) applications. Magnetic design in IPT is vital as it directly impacts the coupling coefficient, thermal performance, and efficiency. The laminated core has become increasingly popular for IPT in recent years. However, the simulation for highly conductive laminated cores can be challenging to obtain an accurate result because of the high anisotropic characteristics and the influence of eddy current loss. This paper discusses the analysis method based on the toroidal core loss and conductivity measurements. Permeability and conductivity tensors are introduced to illustrate the core composite. The FEM simulations are performed in different simulation scenarios. Results reveal that the additional eddy current loss can consist of over 30% of the total core loss, which is able to be covered with the proposed analysis method.
