Fuzzy-Based Energy Management for a Fuel Cell Micro Gas Turbine Battery Power Plant

Hybrid power plants with combined renewable energy sources are attractive configurations for many different applications. However, one major challenge of such power plants is an intelligent energy management system (EMS) which takes the characteristics of the many energy sources into consideration when optimizing the energy flow. This paper presents a fuzzy-based EMS for a hybrid power plant with two fuel cell strings, a micro gas turbine and a battery storage. For designing the fuzzy EMS, a simulation model of a multi-port converter (MPC) with a common DC link capacitor is implemented. The DC link voltage and the power flow in the MPC are controlled by the proposed fuzzy EMS and system characteristics (e.g. current state of charge (SOC) of the battery) are taken into account. Simulation results for different grid scenarios and SOCs of the battery are presented and discussed.
