Improving the Performance of 3-Phase Induction Motors by Developing a Symmetrical 6-Phase Winding Design on the Motor

The 3-phase induction motor is one of the most widely used electric motors today, especially as a driver. This motor has a strong construction, is cheaper, and is easy to operate. The development of this motor is still being carried out so that it can work with better performance. Several studies that have been developed to improve the performance of this motor include operating the 3-phase induction motor on 1-phase power, adding permanent magnets to the rotor, and increasing the number of motor phases. The problem is that all the methods that have been used require expensive additional costs to improve motor performance. Therefore, a simple method is still needed to improve motor performance without requiring additional expensive costs. The method used in this study is to develop a 3-phase induction motor winding design like a 6-phase induction motor, but this motor still operates on a 3-phase electric power system. The winding design in this study is focused on the design of 1 layer, 6 phases, 2 poles, and 36 slots. The study is focused on the output power, speed, efficiency, and winding current of the motor. The results of the study show that a 3-phase induction motor with a 6-phase winding design has better performance than a conventional 3- phase induction motor, where the new design motor can work with higher output power (increase 3.85%), speed (increase 0.07%), and efficiency (increase 1.22%) than a conventional 3- phase induction motor, but with nearly the same winding currents (decrease 3.23%).
