Impact of Large Scale Renewable Energy Integration on the Grid Frequency

The conventional power system is subjected to more frequency stability issues like generation loss, increased steady state frequency deviation, cascading failures, and frequent operation of frequency relays due to integration of renewable power into the grid. Integrating renewable power such as wind and solar, cause reduction in system inertia. This impact is reflected on the frequency indices such as rate of change of frequency, frequency nadir, and settling frequency. The frequency indices of the IEEE 57 bus system with 7 thermal generators is compared with the frequency indices of IEEE 57 bus with 5 thermal generators and 2 wind generators and also with the frequency indices of the IEEE 57 bus with 5 thermal generators and 2 solar photovoltaic. The results proves that, as renewable power is integrated, the rate of change of frequency and frequency nadir get increased, and the settling frequency is decreased. The study concludes that, as the renewable integration is increased the system inertia is decreased. MATPOWER and MATLAB SIMULINK is used for simulation.
