Performance of Multiple Intelligent Reflecting Surfaces in RF and FSO Communication Systems

Relay assisted wireless communication systems has been considered as a key technique to extend the network coverage and enhance QoS. To study the significance of relays in the Free Space Optics (FSO), and Radio Frequency (RF) co-operative communication is of great interest for the researchers. Further these days, the conventional analog and digital relays are replaced by Intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRS). The realistic channel fading model suitable for FSO communication is
$\Gamma-\Gamma$
distributions where-as for RF transmissions, it is
$\kappa-\mu$
distribution. In this work, we have developed algorithms for calculate the symbol error rate for various phase shift keying modulations. It is observed that IRS-assisted RF and FSO communication systems perform better than the conventional relays. In RF communication, the performance of N/2 elements in two surfaces better than the N elements in a surface where as in FSO, N elements perform better than the two N/2 elements.
