A Multifunctional FSS with dual band shielding in transmission mode and absorption in reflection mode

Here we report a miniaturized frequency selective surface (FSS) which can be used for electromagnetic shielding in the transmission mode in two frequency bands, namely 4.2-5.8 and 8.6-10 GHz. When the same frequency selective surface is placed on a metal backed substrate having the same thickness, it exhibits absorption at 4 and 7 GHz respectively. The multifunctionality in the FSS is brought about without the intervention of active elements which incur high losses. The FSS is designed by the conglomeration of four concentric meandered square loops which resonate at two distinct frequency bands. The transmission and reflection characteristics of the FSS have been analyzed using finite integration technique.
