A Compact Triple Band FSS Based Microstrip Antenna for 2.4/4/5.8 GHz Applications

A novel shaped compact triple band microstrip patch antenna utilizing Frequency Selective Surface (FSS) for improving gain is proposed. The dimension of the proposed FSS based antenna is
$0.407\lambda_{0}\times 0.407\lambda_{0}\times 0.11\lambda_{0}$
(here free space wavelength is
$\lambda_{0}$
at 2.407 GHz). Mainly three valuable frequency bands for wireless communication systems are covered by the proposed antenna. The achieved frequency bands are 60 MHz (2380 - 2440 MHz) for 2404 MHz ISM band, 140 MHz (3800 - 3940 MHz) for satellite downlink in UK and 1070 MHz (5700 - 6770 MHz) for ISM band 5801 MHz WiMAX and WLAN applications. The size of the antenna is very small. Obtained gain of the antenna is not sufficient for wireless system. The peak gain is enhanced significantly for utilizing band stop FSS at the back side of the antenna. The peak gain is enhanced to 4.2 dBi, which is 7.5 dBi more than that of simple fabricated antenna. The proposed antenna is also very compact.
