Investigating Awareness and Acceptance of IoT Smart Home Applications for Greater Cairo Residents

Internet of Things (IoT) applications are increasingly becoming the trend of future homes. People seek them to achieve comfort, luxury, safety, as well as energy saving. Despite the acknowledged benefits of IoT applications, they are a rather new commodity in the Egyptian market and their adoption in residential units is still limited. Therefore, this research investigates the awareness and acceptance levels for the aforementioned technology among Greater Cairo residents. An online questionnaire was designed and quantitatively analyzed to deduce users’ readiness, concerns and incentives to adopt it. Results show high awareness level of the existence of IoT technology, but not its full range of applications. Reasons behind low adoption rates were identified and applications preferences were categorized according to age groups. Those findings may guide developers and businesses of IoT technologies to knowledge gaps and concerns among potential users of IoT. This would ultimately enhance the future of smart home applications and IoT-backed home automation in Cairo, Egypt.
