Conductive Polymers in Gas Sensors

Summary

With the tremendous advances in technology, gas‐sensing devices are becoming increasingly popular in many areas, including indoor environments, industries, aviation, and detectors for various toxic substances. Even though the most popular type of gas sensor, namely, metal oxide semiconductor gas sensors, have many advantages over other types of gas sensors, their high working temperatures lead to high energy consumption, thereby limiting their practical applications. As a result, conductive polymer gas sensors based on room temperature have attracted the attention of many researchers. In this paper, the research progress of conductive polymers, including polypyrrole (PPy), polyaniline (PANI), polythiophene (PT), poly(phenylene vinylene) (PPV), and poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) in gas sensors in recent years, is reviewed. The application research progress of conducting polymer (CP) sensors in ammonia, nitrogen dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is highlighted. Finally, the review concludes with key and constructive insights into current and future perspectives on the CP for gas sensor applications.
