Opportunities for Collaboration Arising from AASHTO’s CAV Policy Principles

Connected and automated vehicles (CAV) have the potential to greatly improve the safety and mobility of the nation’s transportation system. AASHTO’s CAV Policy Principles were developed in 2021 to support the safe development and deployment of CAVs. This ultimately advances our goals as infrastructure-owner-operators (IOOs) to promote equity, accessibility, sustainability, economic well-being and quality of life. Advancing CAV that meets community-identified needs requires interoperable, reliable, and consistent infrastructure, a cohesive national vision, collaborative partnerships, funding, and clear policy. Many unknowns remain for CAVs, including the pathway and timeline to deployment, and the CAV industry continues to evolve, consolidate, and change. What is known is that one sector cannot do it alone. Intertwined among the ten policy principles are opportunities to collaborate and cooperate across multiple sectors to bring the reality and promise of CAVs to fruition. The presentation will explore several higher priority opportunities.
