Intelligent Service-Oriented Optical Network based on Fine-Grain OTN and Edge-Cloud Coordination

We present a novel intelligent service-oriented optical network (SOON) based on the emerging fine-grain optical transport network (fgOTN) and edge-cloud coordination via multilayer and multi-domain management and control(MC). We further describe an overlay-underlay architecture for efficiently supporting premium cloud services, and provide an example of using OTN as the underlay network for supporting cloud services with low latency and low latency variation. Moreover, we discuss the evolution from the current connection-oriented optical network architecture to the optical cloud network (OCN) architecture. Finally, we demonstrate, in two field trials, the service quality improvements enabled by OTN-based SOON for cloud VR users and enterprise users, as compared with traditional packet switching solutions.
