Evaluating Performance of 5G Remote Rendering Connections for Virtual Reality Application Deployment

In efforts to better understand remote rendering solutions, our team has conducted a multi-factored experiment, evaluating any performance differences between applications rendered to Virtual Reality (VR) headsets through phone hotspots, Fifth Generation of Mobile Communications (5G) wireless access gateways, and tethered configurations. We approached this by testing virtual reality users interacting with VR applications over 5G with all connection types. We explored performance of the applications and these connections defined by Frames per Second (FPS), round trip delay (RTT), and jitter. Measures were then utilized in statistical test to determine any differences between the connection types. These insights help identify additional areas of research for how to best design a 5G system to support VR, extended reality (XR), augmented reality (AR), and mixed reality (MR) applications that require high bandwidth and low latency for remote rendering capabilities.
