Effect of Conductor and Dielectric Arrangement on the Protective Characteristics of Protection Devices in Common and Differential Modes

The paper presents the results of simulation devices used to protect equipment in differential and common modes against pulse interference. We investigate how conductor arrangement on the outer and inner layers, as well as the filling of dielectric with air and the radio absorbing material (RAM), influence the device protective characteristics. The results demonstrate that when the dielectric is filled with the RAM, and the active conductors are located internally, the attenuation coefficient is 1.31 times less in common and 1.22 times less in differential than when the conductors are located externally. For air-filled dielectric together with the active conductors located inside, the attenuation coefficient is 1.33 times less in common and 1.15 times less in differential than with their external location. The maximum attenuation coefficient is achieved with air-filled dielectric, otherwise the attenuation coefficient is less by a factor of 1.2 times. The research shows that to achieve the best attenuation coefficient, the external arrangement of active conductors is preferred together with the air as dielectric.
