Fuzzy-based performance measurement of building construction projects: a case study

Project performance measurement is a critical part of project management that focuses on measuring clients' satisfaction. The Key Performance Indicator (KPI) gets attention to measure the project performance as they can be measured qualitatively and quantitatively. This study aims to measure the performance of building construction projects in the North-East region of Bangladesh using selected KPIs. Accordingly, the fourteen most critical KPIs were selected through literature review and expert judgments. Thirty building projects were studied based on the selected KPIs through a structured questionnaire survey, and the performances of different building projects were presented with the most and least performed KPIs. The data were analyzed using the Fuzzy Group Decision Making Approach (FGDMA). The results were viewed from different perspectives, such as the overall performance of the building projects, private and public building projects. The overall findings show no significant difference among these categories (overall, public, and private) identifying the top-five critical factors except for some order variations. Thus, the critical KPIs are construction supervision, design quality, schedule performance, projected construction time, and accident rate/safety. The study findings will assist the contractors and consultants to focus on the needs and desires of their primary customer- the project owner, to satisfy them by providing better services.
