Introducing the Chronic Disease mHealth App Quality Evaluation Framework (CHRONIQ)

The increase in mobile devices and mobile health applications (mHealth apps) has revolutionised healthcare, especially chronic disease management. Yet, concerns about app quality and evidence-based practices have emerged, crucial in addressing the significant global mortality caused by chronic diseases. This study aims to introduce the Chronic Disease mHealth App Quality Evaluation Framework (CHRONIQ). The framework was developed through a structured Literature Review that investigated current mHealth app evaluation literature and tools, such as MARS, Enlight Suite and AQUA, in the context of chronic disease management challenges. A total of 25 articles were included in the final thematic analysis. This result is CHRONIQ, a tailored evaluation framework for South African healthcare, addressing chronic disease management needs and enhancing healthcare delivery. The CHRONIQ framework consists of eight dimensions: Information, System, Service, Engagement, User Satisfaction, Health Impact, Intention to Use, and Net Benefits. These dimensions comprehensively assess app quality, user satisfaction, and health impact, aligning with the Delone and McLean Information Systems Success Model as the study's theoretical foundation. CHRONIQ is a valuable tool for healthcare professionals, policymakers, and researchers in South Africa and beyond. The framework's application can facilitate evidence-based decision-making, enhance user satisfaction, and ultimately improve healthcare outcomes in chronic disease management.
