Monitoring and Analysis of Particulate Matter and Ambient Conditions near Traffic Area

In this comprehensive air pollution study conducted within the premises of Maulana Azad National Institute of Technology (MANIT) Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, India campus, we employed cutting-edge technology, specifically the Oizom Dustroid device, capable of monitoring Particulate Matter (PM): PM2.5(µg/m3), PM10(µg/m3), relative humidity (%) and temperature(°C). The study unveiled significant findings that shed light on the intricate dynamics of air quality within the campus. The analysis of time series plots revealed a compiling relationship between PM2.5, PM10 and relative humidity, with these parameters exhibiting a synchronous trend. Intriguingly, they displayed an inverse correlation with temperature variations. Temporal plots provided further insights into the diurnal patterns of air quality. Both PM2.5 and PM10 concentrations peaked during the hours from 12 NOON to 3 PM, coinciding with environmental conditions conductive to particle suspension. Notably, relative humidity exhibited a distinct pattern, reaching its zenith between 2 AM and 1 PM. This observation suggests that elevated humidity levels may contribute to the prolonged presence of PM particles in the atmosphere. Additionally, our study highlighted the role of vehicular emissions as a contributing factor to the fluctuations in PM2.5 and PM10 levels, particularly on Thursday, Friday and Saturdays. These days witnessed a heightened influx of heavy trucks due to the construction material supply, potentially leading to increased particulate matter in the air. This study not only provides valuable insights into the air quality dynamics within MANIT campus but also underscores the importance of comprehensive monitoring and informed strategies for mitigating air pollution, particularly in regions with similar environmental challenges.
