Life Extension Feasibility Study of a Combined Cycle Power Plant

Consideration is being given to extending the life of Power Station A (PSA), Perth in Western Australia, for continued operation beyond its original design life of 30 years equating to 2032, until 2038 or beyond. This study aims to assess the remnant life of the PSA asset and confirm the feasibility of a life extension from the original retirement date of 2032. This study identifies the most critical assets of the plant, ascertain the remnant life, and forecast the major maintenance of each asset. The study findings will support the development of a risk analysis and investment plan necessary to ensure the asset can be safely operated, maintaining reliability and availability for the extended maintenance cycle. Additionally, the study establishes the benefits and value of extending the life cycle of the PSA asset by: (i) detailing the investment and resources required for capital projects and major maintenance to extend the operation from its existing retirement date, (ii) this includes the consideration of upgrade pathways for assets that are soon to be obsolete or will not make it to 2039, and (iii) understanding how PSA can be best positioned to be compliant with the government’s 2030 80% greenhouse gas reduction and net zero 2050 vision.
