Wideband Frequency Reconfigurable Dielectric Resonator Antenna with Defected Ground Plane for 5G Millimeter Wave Application

A compact wideband frequency reconfigurable cylindrical dielectric resonator antenna for 5G millimeter wave application is presented. Frequency reconfigurability is obtained using the PIN Diode and operating in four configurations: ON-ON, OFF-OFF, ON-OFF, and OFF-ON. The proposed antenna is designed on Rogers 5880 substrate with a thickness of 0.254 mm, and the ground plane is partial. Defected Ground Structure (DGS) on the ground plane is used to obtain the wideband response in the proposed antenna. The return loss S11, Gain, Surface current distribution, and radiation pattern of the proposed antenna are investigated. The impedance bandwidth % in ON-ON, ON-OFF, OFF-ON, and OFF-OFF are 17.46, 15.69, 15.51, and 14.82 respectively. Hence, the proposed antenna is suitable for millimeter wave application.
