The Impact of Fear of Missing Out on University Students’ Learning Achievement with a Stressor Strain Outcome Model

In January 2022 the number of internet users reached 191.4 million users. This number is increasing compared to last year and with the recent COVID-19 pandemic and the shift of behavior happened, this number is believed to keep increasing. As the behavior shift is believed to stay even after the pandemic ends. Because of the pandemic the technology and internet influence have been amplified as more activities nowadays can be conducted virtually including academic activity where all students, including university students, are introduced to online classes. Where in the process of doing so the university students are then faced with various technology and internet to support their learning activities. With all of that happening daily, it makes them prone to getting addicted to technology and internet including social media which is one of the popular byproducts of the technology and internet. This addiction also makes university students experience Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) as they keep checking their social media. This research uses the quantitative method and the Structural Equation Model - Partial Least Square (SEM PLS) technique to analyze the data and the result is that compulsive social media use influences learning performance and procrastination due to social media use at university. Meanwhile Exhibitionism does not influence FoMO but FoMO influences compulsive social media use. Moreover, SNS addiction and voyeurism influences FoMO. Hopefully, with this research it can encourage university students to be wiser in social media usage.
